Setting Realistic Expectations
As a first time hearing aid user, it can be difficult to know what to expect from hearing aids. Often individuals rely on the experiences and stories shared by their friends and family, however this can lead to unrealistic expectations.
Here is some basic information on what to expect as a first time hearing aid user:
- Hearing aids do not restore hearing to normal, but they do help an individual to hear better and to restore communication abilities.
- When first fit with hearing aids, voices and other noises may seem very loud.
- Hearing aids require time to get used to. This acclimatization process can take up to 4 weeks of daily wear for the brain to adapt to the new sound processing.
- You may require multiple visits with your hearing care professional to adjust your hearing aids to suit your needs.
When hearing aids are fit to your specific needs:
- Conversations should be at a comfortable loudness level
- Loud sounds should be loud but not uncomfortable
- Your own voice should sound acceptable to you
- The devices should sit comfortably on/in your ears
